Winthrop Maine, originally called Pondtown because of its numerous lakes and ponds is definitely a “small town with big character”. It is a recreational area located among lakes. The town includes the villages of Winthrop and East Winthrop. Pondtown inherited its name Winthrop from the first colonial governor of Massachusetts, John Winthrop.
In the early 19th century, Winthrop and its lakes developed into a summer resort, which it remains today. Very attractive low populated area of the country, the Winthrop resort area remains one of the true hidden pearls of central Maine.
